Rachel Szalay began her career in theatre as a graduate of NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts), performing on stage, TV and film before turning her creative energies to Fine Arts. Rachel's medium of choice is pastels and her interest in flora and botanical illustrations has informed her latest body of work.
The exhibition 'Remarkable Plants' has been created in conjunction with Fair Food Week and the opening of Katoomba Co-op's new space in Ha'Penny Lane.
Rachel's masterful use of colour pastel provides a lush interpretation of fruits and vegetables steeped in the tradition of early botanical drawings. They are colourful, rhythmic and engaging; luminous in their layering of colour.
Traditionally, Rachel produces large scale drawings which she has exhibited around the Blue Mountains as well as Sydney, but for this exhibition, she has offered up a more intimate series of artworks, juicy in colour and form.
Rachel is also a member of the Mtns Made group which showcases creative talent from the Blue Mountains region. Her work, under this banner, can be bought at various outlets around the mountains in the form of printed cards and small prints.
